Left leg, the one that periodically is swollen, started bothering me at about the mile point, so I walked back.

Boot Camp

Wow - I sure can sweat a lot. On Monday, we did a two mile Indian Run. We divide up into ability groups, we just divided up. I ended up running by myself for the majority of the time as my group was literally around the corner before I got on the roof. After the run, we did suicide sprints - I didn’t - my knee would not have taken it. Then we did two laps - one at 70% effort, the second in an all out sprint. If there had been something in my stomach, I would have decorated the deck. What a great way to begin the day!

I had such a great time in the morning that I thought about going back for the evening session. After rehydrating, I regained lucidity and instead jumped on the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes.

Today we started out by carrying Body Bars to the roof. After warm ups we hit the track with the bars but were able to drop them after the first lap. After the second lap, we would go down the stairs, sprint the straights on the indoor track, come back up the stairs and jog the curve. One the Marines was at the beginning of the straightaway, encouraging and pushing. That’s actually something I always appreciate- the motivation and the pushing to go beyond what I think I can do. We ended with some group exercises which included a good ab set. I’m still not back from the ab injury. At this point it’s about rebuilding strength. I’m certain I’m over the injury.

Sunday Swim-Run-Walk

I thought I wanted to run today but it was pretty warm when I finished at work so I decided to swim. Did 1000 meters total. 500 easy, 300 medium, 4×25 hard with a 25 m recovery.

I really wanted to run, so I hopped out of the pool and went for a run. No pace, no distance goal. I just wanted run. The route was dictated by the shade - very unusual for me. I usually plan the runs pretty well.

Went two miles and decided I didn’t want to run anymore. I was at the Battery and wanted to walk back. It’s been a long time since I just walked through downtown Charleston in the daylight. I need to grab my camera and do that next week.

Stopped and chatted with my friend, Allan, and met his new dog, Romo. Course I walked is in the previous energy.

Boot Camp. Glide. Glide. Boot Camp. Boot Camp

Tuesday’s Boot Camp was probably one of the hardest ones I’ve ever done. After the usual warm ups, we started with the Body Bars. Not too bad. I think I would have really struggled with a heavier bar but I got through it ok. Then we went to the roof. The people coming downstairs didn’t look so good. We lined up on the tennis courts in the center. One group would do an exercise - they seemed to be random - while the other group sprinted to the wall and back. This was across two tennis courts. And sometimes, the Marines didn’t like how we did something and we would sprint again. It was been a long time since I felt like I was going to puke in the middle of class.

Tuesday evening I spent 30 minutes on the arc trainer. I would have gone longer but had a doctor’s appointment that evening. Good news from the doc. My lipid profile is excellent - LDL is down, HDL is up. HgA1C=6.3.

Wednesday morning I had planned on running but was so stiff and sore from Boot Camp on Tuesday that I decided to get on the arc trainer after seeing my Charleston Runs training group off on their run. Spent 30 minutes on that as I wanted to meet the runners when they came back as well.

Wednesday evening, my friend, Allan, convinved me to go to Boot Camp with him. I arrived early and wanting to see some of the Tour de France, I grabbed my headphones and hopped on the arc trainer for 30 minutes. Went into the evening Boot Camp session, which tended to be not as intense because of the number of new people, and had a nice surprise waiting. It was the same workout as the one from the day before - on the roof that had been baking in the sun all day. That heat just sucks it right out of you.

Thursday Boot Camp was much gentler in comparison. We did a group workout - 8 or ten people in a group that rotated through stations, running a lap in between.

Monday Boot Camp, Tae-Bo, and Body Bars

I’m worn out.

Started the day with Boot Camp. There’s a new group of Marines onboard. They are A-1 instructors - motivating, knowledgable, and they’re mixing it up. I look forward to working out with them.

Ended the day with a Tae-Bo class and a Body Bar class. Two hours. My heart rate pretty much stayed about 140 during the Tae-Bo class. Very full class and I enjoyed the different movements. I look like idiot doing them but I don’t really give a rip.

James, the instructor for the Body Bar class, was giving my friends, Allan and Emily, and me a load of grief when we couldn’t do what he asked. He constantly teased about us being Boot Campers. I think we did pretty good but it was really humbling. The best part was the beginning when James spent a lot of time stretching us -  a lot of yoga type stretches. I really needed that.

 I’m tired.
