Daniel Island Twilight Series – Race 4

Thursday, August 30th, 2007
On one hand I was disappointed. I wanted to break 30 minutes for the 5K. And then as I thought a little bit more about it – I was still disappointed but I was ok with the time and felt like I approached this one a little differently than I had in the past.I didn’t prepare to max out on this 5K race. I’m more concerned about finishing the marathon in October. Yet, when I was through, I realized that I wasn’t praying, “Lord, let me get through this,” or saying to myself, “Gosh it’s hot, I wish this was over.”

I was actually striving and pushing myself to go faster. That’s much different than it has been in the past. Yes, over the last few races, I pushed myself a bit but I didn’t push myself for 3.1 miles. I didn’t push myself so that I was hurting from beginning to end – I was pushing myself to finish. This time I pushed myself to keep up a pace.

It is so hard to describe the difference. For once I felt like I was racing rather than running in a race.

I was very pleased with the improvement in time over the series. All of them have been hot. As I went by one of the course marshalls today, I commented that it was hard. When I talked to him later, he pointed out that it wasn’t as hot as it was last time. No, it wasn’t but it wasn’t as difficult as it was today.

Race 1 – 34.12
Race 2 – I was in Uganda
Race 3 – 32.34
Race 4 – 31.07

Next time, when the race temp is at a reasonable level, I’m sure I’ll get under 30.

Weigh-In

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

199! Down 6 pounds. Total of 64. Below 200 for the first time in 8 or 9 years.

Run 05:03 am

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
The weather recorded today doesn’t seem correct at all. I guess it’s the humidity that seems to be so punishing. During the last few miles, everytime I had to stop before crossing the street, I wrung out my shorts (no, I didn’t take them off to do it). I was amazed at the amount of perspiration left behind on the ground.

I didn’t carry water this am. There’s a fountain in Hampton Park, the parking garage across from the aquarium, Waterfront Park, and at the Battery. I also popped into Jack’s Cafe on George Street for some COLD water and to say hey to Jack. So, if he look at the stops in the chart – they are mostly where I stopped to drink along with some waiting for traffic as the morning rush hour started.

I was pleased with the pace of the run. I was so soaked that I walked into the shower fully clothed. I did take off my shoes first but I don’t think it would have mattered if I had worn them in there, too.

Tuesday Workout

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Calisthenics, 15 minutes of running, more exercises with sprints in between. Good stuff!

Run 05:46 pm

Monday, August 27th, 2007
I planned on running a little bit farther but if you look at the splits and the weather – I was fading fast in the heat. I wasn’t feeling great – a little nauseous from pushing it – so decided to cut the run short.

Felt pretty good until about 2.5 miles.

Monday Workout

Monday, August 27th, 2007

About 15 of us this am. Ran 1/2 mile warmup by myself, then the group ran 1/3 mile warm up then 4 laps of sprinting on the straights and recovery on the curves. Felt pretty good. Then we did a body bar workout. It was challenging and I’m sure I’ll feel the pain tomorrow.

Running this evening with Kurtz unless he’s playing golf.

Run 06:03 am

Saturday, August 25th, 2007
Amazingly, the GPS even records where I went to the port-a-let at the foot of the bridge.

Ran with Laura and Ashleigh. AShleigh hadn’t done anything this long before and turned around at the foot of the bridge but she did great.

Wasn’t as hot this morning as it was on Wednesday. Didn’t carry water, knowing that there was a water fountain at the foot of the bridge.

It’s really surprising to me. As we came off the bridge we had right at two miles to go. I was thinking that it wasn’t too far, just easy stuff to finish. I really do remember when I couldn’t run two miles and approaching my first 5k, I was wondering – “What am I thinking?”

Thursday – Workout

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Worked out with BC friends. Still sore from Tuesday and from yesterday’s run.

Run 05:48 am

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007
A good run. It was hot but not punishingly so. I used the heart rate monitor to make sure I wasn’t bagging it. It took a lot more exertion to raise my heart rate today than it did Monday afternoon. Shows the effect of heat on the body.

Tuesday Workout

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Worked out with Boot Camp folks. It was good to see them again. I can feel it this evening.
