The Fastest Mazunga in Masindi

Actually, my running partner, John, is probably the fastest mazunga (white man) in Masindi. We finally managed to go for a run on Sunday afternoon for 60 minutes. We ran on a red, dusty road that was pretty hilly. It was like running up and down the Cooper River Bridge twice with no breeze, no pedestrian traffic lane and loud trucks raising dust and passing within inches of you. But it felt so good to run without sprinting up and down the parking lot.

The Ugandan Workout

I’ve been in Uganda since Monday night, having arrived on a journey that started the day before. I ran 12.5 miles the day before but didn’t experience more discomfort than I usually do when crammed inside a sardine time.

On Wednesday morning, my friend John and I got up to run. Did you know that at the equator, there is only 12 hours of daylight each day? We were up at 6 but the sun doesn’t rise until 7. About 6:15 we tried running on the road. bad idea. No shoulder. traffic. Potholes and it’s dark outside. We decided it would be safer to do calisthenics in the courtyard of the hotel bar and to do wind sprints in the parking lot. Hopefully, on Sunday we can do a longer run in the daylight.

I miss running and working out hard. I’m on a mission trip and the team eats at 7 am everyday and is on the road by 8:15. We don’t return back to Masindi each evening until about 6. The traffic is too bad at the time to venture onto the road. Also, we are so worn out that I don’t want to do anything but sleep and go to bed. But, God is good and shows up on this trip in amazing ways.

IOP Beach Race

The time is completely off on this one as it took me ten minutes to turn off the phone off and was 1/2 mile into the race before I turned it on. My friend Alan kept on telling me to go ahead but I was fine to hang with him. 1. I told him I would run the race with him if I had run the 8 miles ahead of time, and 2. I was tired after running those 8 miles. We finished in under 50 minutes which I was fine with.

Pre-Race Run 05:54 am

Laura and I did 8.5 miles on purpose before the IOP Beach Run. We wanted to get in 12 miles so we did the 8 and then the four.

The run felt really good and I don’t care how cool it is - I’m going to sweat. I was soaked when we were done.

Daniel Island Twilight Fun Run 5K Series - Race 1

Wow - HOT - heat index of over 100. I wanted to run at a 10 minute mile or faster but ran at 11. Definitely God watcching out for me when the GPS didn’t start as a I expected. I would have pushed too hard if it had worked correctly.

Course approximate. Started at the ballfield, went out on the fitness path and went through completed and uncompleted areas. Little tough to figure out exactly from map and satellite imagery.

Bridge Run 05:51 am

Ran with Steven. I have to give it to him - he’s game to give it a shot. I know how it feels to have stop. I was very pleased with my pace this morning, especially considering the heat. Ran almost to the end of the bridge and back but caught up with Trish and ran back with her.

Run 05:29 pm

Heat Index of 96! It was very warm out. Ran with my friend, Steven. I felt bad for him as he struggled a bit during the run but he was game and press on. I was pleased with pace, especially considering the heat.

Monday Workout

4o minutes on the bike then I ran 1.5 miles+. I warmed for 1/2 mile and then ran pickups for the next 3 laps and then cooled down for another 3 laps. Somewhere during the cooldown, I started running and chatting with friends and ended up running an extra lap or two.

Run 05:50 am - My shoelaces were only damp.

Ran with Adam this am. The miles went quicly as the conversation was good and the weather was cool - I am sure in other parts of the world, it would have been considered warm. There was a breeze and we started in the dark. Overcast as it lightened and there were even some bog fat raindrops that fell.
