Good workouts this week

Boot Camp and Healthy Charleston Challenge started again this week. The first two days of Boot Camp were just a bit intense. My legs were pretty trashed on Thursday. I’m ok with that because I do enjoy working hard. I backed off  on the workouts this week. I did hop on the elliptical for 30 minutes after we ran on Friday and did an interval workout. I like 2-a-days but my second workout on Friday ended up being yardwork. I dug quite a few yards of dirt yesterday and am feeling it today.

I’m doing HCC again. A good team of 6 who have also done it before. Beginning weight 254.

Healthy Charleston Challenge

Did 60 minutes on the bike before the meeting. Weighed in at 242, down 2 lbs.

Thursday - A Long Day

Started out the day with Boot Camp. We stayed in the gym and at one point we did a lot of static moves. Low plank, t-stand, high plank, tabletops - I sweat a lot and would hold things until my hands would slip out from under me.  Between that and just not having the upper body strength I had 4 or 5 months ago, I continually ended up on my behind.

My rising blood sugar level was a little elevated - 144. That’s about 14 points higher than it normally is. At the end of the workout is was 199. Normally, it’s about 155. I am starting to get tuned in to what a difference my blood sugar makes and I was surprised at how much I struggled. As I got back into shape, I didn’t notice because I always struggled. It a continual education.

The Healthy Charleston Challenge started this evening. I am now the Lead Mentor for the program and am very excited about it. It was a long meeting but others won’t be quite as long. I weighed in at 244, about 40 pounds heavier than when I finished but that will change.

Thursday Boot Camp and Track Workout

Did circuit training in Boot Camp. Running, arms, and abs. Good workout. Easy to tell where I’m lacking in fitness.

Did a track workout on Thursday evening. Some with Steve. Some instruction of HCC Joe D Bands team. My legs felt tight and tired so I didn’t push myself hard. Now is not the time to get injured.

A Different Week

This week has been a little different. Saturday I had a problem with my calf and decided to curtail the running and to see the doctor. I did Boot Camp on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and bailed on the group runs. I either stayed with those who couldn’t stay with the group or did an ab workout. On Thursday, after our group run, the beginner class worked out with Ultimate Boot Camp. For many, it was intimidating, for others it was shocking. For all, it was eye opening. Some felt overwhelmed - others gained confidence. Amazing to me is the range of reactions.

I ended up in doctor’s office on Thursday morning and finally got to actually meet the doctor more than an hour after my scheduled appointment. Whereas, I’m still not happy about wasting my time, I’m really glad I got in to see him. The diagnoses was that I had a sore soleus (calf muscle) probably caused by the dehydration I had suffered on my longer runs. Coupled with dehydration is also the use of Zocor which can cause problems that are coupled with the dehydration. He told to ice and stretch 3x a day and to take 600 mg of ibuprofen 3x a day. I’m not a big fan of anti-inflammatories but the doc is also a runner and understand my desire to get to the start line healthy. He said to continue the training but if I needed to back off on the mileage to do it with the shorter runs during the week and to continue with the long runs.

So, I jumped right back in on Thursday afternoon and resumed the training. Steve and I ran 8 helf-mile intervals at marathon race pace (11 min/mile) with a one lap recovery in between, a total of 5.17 miles. I felt great afterwards and had no pain in my soleus.

Weigh in last night - 230, down 1.2

Post Boot Camp Workout

About 18 of us gathered this morning to workout together. Because so many are running  or run-walking the Bridge Run on Saturday, we’re trying not to be too strenuous but it was still a good workout. Started out with 14 minutes of running, did a round robin workout of abs, arms, and legs and then ran 2 more laps. Finished with another 1/2 round of exercises.

TBC had their first weigh-in for our summer challenge. I weighed in at 208 - 12 pounds heavier than Thursday. You have shoes, water weight, different scale, and just not being overally concerned about what I was eating. I wasn’t being stupid but I wasn’t being diligent either. Back on track today.

Graduations and the Final Workouts

Boot Camp graduation was this morning. It was the largest graduating class they’ve had and registration for the summer sessions were taken immediately afterwards. The class is full. This is a testament to the Marines who run the program. They are so encouraging - they’re tough but they seem to know who they can push and cajole and who they speak quietly to. They’ll make great officers.

Team Boot Camp worked out together after graduation for about an hour. We ran a mile, did abs and arms and then ran another half mile. Everybody was pumped and confident about the evening but also didn’t want to let up.

Alan, Grady, and I met at 2.30. We ran for 45 minutes on the roof, got the bike for 45 minutes and then got on the elliptical for 30 minutes. Karen was working out at the same time and then Charilla and Pat came as soon as they got off work. We were all ready to be done. Several of us had closed down the Wellness Center this week. I think we all spent ten minutes of so in the steam room or sauna.

At the final weigh-in I was at 196.7. (Yes, that’s obviously much less than last night - different scales and some water weight, though I actually worked at trying to stay hydrated and I did eat.) I haven’t been there in at least 10 or 12 years. Felt pretty good. And one team member lost 15 lbs in the last week!

Our team won. We lost 249.6 lbs with 50 lbs coming from one person. That was 13.08% of our starting weight. We’re very pleased and want to thank everybody who has cheered us on over the last 12 weeks.

Wednesday Workout & Weigh-In

had my regular appointment with Dr. Slott and weighed in at 203, 10 lbs less than last month. Seems like I finally have things dialed back in and am going back in the right direction.

Met Grady, Dave, and Alan at the gym. Dave had to leave after 30 minutes and Alan joined Grady and I after taking two classes this afternoon. I spent 75 minutes on the arc trainer (HR=124) and 40 minutes on the bike (HR=115). I think we all had the desire to stay later but this morning’s workout still was doing a number on our legs.

Thursday Boot Camp & HCC

Thursday’s Boot Camp is one that they now call LAG. You’re constantly moving and it seems like there are a variety of exercises. This was the last workout before the final PFT and it left me spent. I don’t think I had too much more left in me. A friend later told me he was running on the track above the gym and could feel the heat rising from the gym ever time he ran by. I was really surprised at how I could keep up. There was one point late in the hour when we were doing bends and thrusts. I had to switch to steam engines when we got to 11.

Tonight was a weigh-in for the HealthyCharleston Challenge. I was at 203, down 3 from last week.

Thursday Healthy Charleston Challenge

Team Boot camp remains in First Place in the Healthy Charleston Challenge. They told me I lost four pounds last week. I weighed in at 206 both weeks.  Or at least that’s what I saw on the scale. I might have seen the scale incorrectly as I’ve had to tighten up my belt in the last week.

Got a workout in ahead of time. 65 minutes on the arc trainer. HR=133.
